Grades 3 - 6

Like any machine, sometimes body parts need repairs or servicing when the body cannot take care of the problems itself. That's where biomedical engineers come in. They use engineering to solve problems in medicine, such as creating replacement body parts, drug-delivery systems, medical instruments, and test equipment. Their work helps restore health and function, and improves the quality of life for people who are sick or injured. In our Biomedical Engineering: Prosthetics Club, participants will:

  • Follow the Engineering Design Process to solve real world problems

  • Explore the anatomy of the human knee

  • Understand Biomedical engineers apply mechanical engineering to biological & medical issues

  • Design a prototype

  • Build prostheses

  • Collect and analyze data about variation in human feet

  • Decipher how data affects the design of running shoes

  • Brainstorm how materials are useful in designing a knee brace

  • Use the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, create, and improve their own knee brace designs.

  • Partake in an Engineering Showcase / Presentation
